You’ve heard of Ueno, but have you heard of Bueno?
Ueno is where we make good things for people who pay us money. And Bueno is where we give some of that money to people who use it to make things better for others.
It’s a good system.
Over the last few years Bueno has spent about $100,000 in support of various good causes.
Through Bueno, we've supported things like conference and retreat scholarships for disadvantaged groups, as well as thoughtful and inspirational podcasts and magazines. We gave to Planned Parenthood when the organization was threatened with defunding, and helped an innovation center and startup incubator with a focus on disabled entrepreneurs. We’ve given to the homeless in Portland, and raised money for immigrant families at the border.
There’s never been an official manifesto, but most of what Bueno has done throughout the years has had something to do with people’s advantages in life — leveling the playing field between those who have them and those who don’t.
Where are we going with this?
Well, today Ueno committed to give at least $1 million through Bueno over the next ten years, or at least $100,000 annually, starting in 2019.
In a blog post announcing the pledge, Haraldur Thorleifsson, Ueno’s founder and CEO, wrote: “Fairly early on we started to give back. In the beginning it wasn’t huge amounts, but over the years it’s grown. … As Ueno keeps growing we want to make sure we keep the spirit of Bueno in our DNA. We want to remind ourselves how lucky we are and keep giving back to the communities that helped us.”
